Rhode Island began automobile registration and state-issued plates in 1904.  From 1904 through 1979, all plates were black and white except the 1946-47 issue.  The 1936 plate celebrated the "300TH YEAR" of the original colony's settlement in 1636.  The current issue of plates started in 1996.
